Noah

In St Mark's, Venice, there is a cheerful 12th century mosaic of the story of Noah. These include his naked drunkeness and the (hilarious) reactions of his family. Noah's story is both mythological and human, strangely full of the same imagery which clusters around Jesus. Humourous and horrifying it reminds us of the perseverance of human sin, and teaches us to wait with eagerness for the coming of Christ. Today's story is told by Caitlin, who is (almost) incumbent of St Chad's and St Luke's, Skerton in the city of Lancaster. She was until a week ago curate at Ripon Cathedral.

Joseph

Joseph of Nazareth, Jesus' Dad. I stumbled across this statue in Burford in the Cotswolds in the midst of some wanderings. How wonderful to see a statue of Jesus and Joseph I thought, usually its only Jesus and Mary you see. On closer inspection, the little sign didn't mention Joseph, but described it as a depiction of God our Father. And lots of us struggle with that concept, for various reasons. But someone once said to me the reason they thought Joseph must have been a Very Good Thing Indeed was because, when Jesus was trying to put into language and concepts we could understand as humans, how God loves us, he said - well, God's like a Dad. Good old Joseph.

Abraham and Isaac
